Where Croatia gets expensive

Dubrovnik Old Town, Hvar, Split centre and Istria can become expensive in peak summer. Hotels, restaurants, parking, taxis and tours are the costs that rise fastest.

Where Croatia is still good value

Zadar, Zagreb, Šibenik, inland towns and shoulder-season trips are usually much better value. May, June, September and October often give the best balance between weather and price.

How to avoid overpaying

Book accommodation early, compare destination costs before choosing your base, check ferry prices in advance, avoid driving into expensive parking zones and keep a buffer for hidden costs.
